2007 Constituency Tour

This past week was the conclusion of the 2007 constituency tour and once again I found it to be both enjoyable and informative. Thank you to everyone who came out to meet with us. We were in 15 communities this year and throughout the constituency the issues remained constant.

People are concerned with the exodus of young people from their communities and the whole province. These numbers may look like statistics but these are our children and grandchildren. This exodus is the main issue that affects everything from the review of our school’s viability to funding for our communities infrastructure and recreational facilities.

Healthcare is always tops on everyone’s agenda and really has been one of the main issues through the seven years I have been hosting this tour. Agriculture and highways are always hot topics but this year more that any other our loss of population is of concern as we try to find trades people who have moved away to greener pastures.

There is a great deal of discussion on ways to get our own children home and ways to invite skilled workers from other regions to come make Saskatchewan their home.

Without doubt, the most asked question is “when is the election?” and for many people in rural Saskatchewan, it can’t come soon enough.

I have been very fortunate to have met so many people throughout the years of this tour. I have made many friends and had some lively discussions with people from all political stripes. I look forward to seeing many of you through the year when I am in your communities but as the 2007 community tour as wrapped up just in time to prepare for spring session I want to thank you again for helping make the tour a huge success.
