Legislative Report (20 October 2004)

Legislative Report, 20 October 2004

Last week, the NDP announced an $8 million out-of-court settlement in the SPUDCO fiasco, bringing the total amount lost by this NDP government to over $34 million. This is the largest government business loss in Saskatchewan history. To put it into perspective, SPUDCO is, on a per capita basis, ten times larger than the federal ADSCAM scandal, which has led to a public inquiry now underway in Ottawa. We in the Saskatchewan Party have called on the NDP government to do right by the taxpayers who have paid for this mess and put in place a public inquiry. Many questions remain, including:

  • Who is responsible for the financial loss?
  • Who made the decision to mislead the public for six years?
  • Who made the decision to violate the government’s own law?
  • Why was a countersuit launched by the government?
  • What is being done to prevent this from every happening again?

The people of Saskatchewan are outraged over SPUDCO. We are hearing from our constituents and we will continue to push for answers for the people of this province. We all are paying this bill, we have the right to see the invoice.
