Legislative Report (22 May 2008)

Considerable Progress by Saskatchewan Party Government

Six month anniversary

In just six months, your Saskatchewan Party government has done more for the people of Saskatchewan than the NDP did in16 years. Our government recently marked the six month anniversary of being sworn in. In that time, we have kept more than 60 campaign promises, made an unprecedented $1 billion infrastructure investment in highways, hospitals and schools and brought our labour laws in line with the rest of Canada. Our government is committed to sustaining the economic momentum and ensuring everyone shares in the prosperity.

Saskatchewan’s economy is on a roll

Saskatchewan continues to out-perform the rest of Canada. In March 2008, we led the country with retail sales of $1.1 billion. Saskatchewan families are sharing in the prosperity and enjoying a better quality of life. So far this year, Saskatchewan has already seen record oil and gas land sales, record retail sales, record export growth, record housing construction, and record new vehicle sales.

Keeping young people in Saskatchewan

Coming soon to university convocation near you: a complete package telling grads how they can benefit from Canada’s most aggressive youth retention program. The Graduate Retention program is also being promoted on-line and in newspapers. Graduates who stay in Saskatchewan can get up to $20,000 in tuition rebates. Under the NDP, Saskatchewan lost thousands of young people to outmigration. With this program, and other initiatives undertaken by our government, more and more young people will be able to start both careers and families in Saskatchewan.

$6.4 million to improve our schools

Leaky roofs and outdated classrooms are part of the legacy of NDP neglect. Our government is spending 6.4 million dollars to address those problems. The money will go to fix roofs, renovate classrooms, and upgrade mechanical systems in 36 schools across the province. Making sure our children are safe and secure will help them be successful in both the classroom and in life.

Western Premiers Conference in Prince Albert

There’s a lot of talk these days about the power of Canada’s New West, and not just north of the 49th parallel. When Saskatchewan plays host next week to the annual Western Premiers’ Conference, guests will include the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins. The conference will be held May 28-30 in Prince Albert, with Premier Brad Wall leading the discussion on a variety of topics, including the challenges and opportunities in rural and remote communities.
