Legislative Report, 29 October 2004

As I travel around the constituency there is one topic that comes up again and again. The people of Indian Head – Milestone want to know what happened with SPUDCO.

SPUDCO will not go away as long as there are questions left unanswered.

Despite assurances from the NDP that the government was prepared to answer any questions the Official Opposition might have on the $35 million SPUDCO saga, this proved to be yet another falsehood this week in a meeting of the Crown and Central Agencies committee at the Legislature. During this meeting, the NDP refused to answer a number of questions relating to the SPUDCO case and even cut off debate on the issue.

When Saskatchewan Party MLAs asked questions of NDP Crown Management Minister Pat Atkinson regarding her government’s handling of the SPUDCO lawsuit, she refused to answer a number of them stating the NDP could be exposed to further legal action.

Atkinson refused to answer these questions even though NDP Minister for SaskWater Peter Prebble stated that the NDP government would answer any further questions on the SPUDCO debacle.

It looks as though the NDP hasn’t learned its lessons and is still covering up important details in the SPUDCO case. Only a public inquiry can get to the bottom of how the NDP government managed to lose $35 million of taxpayers’ dollars. Although the NDP refuses to call a public inquiry, we in the Saskatchewan Party will continue to press for one in the days and weeks ahead.
