Legislative Report (19 June 2008)
Province Seeks Your Input
SHARING THE BENEFITS
Saskatchewan is experiencing unprecedented economic growth and Premier Brad Wall has asked all government MLAs to spend the summer listening to the priorities of their constituents. This week, a link was added to the Government website to give constituents the opportunity to submit their ideas online. To do so, please visit the Official Provincial Website and click on “Sharing the benefits.” The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2008 and all responses will be kept confidential. Your response is important to us and we look forward to hearing your ideas on what the government should do with the benefits of our growing economy.
THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR IS SOARING
Saskatchewan’s manufacturing sector is continuing to grow compared to the rest of Canada. Statistics Canada reported Saskatchewan’s manufacturing sector grew by 14 per cent for April 2008 when compared to April 2007. Nationally, it decreased by 2.6 per cent. Saskatchewan’s increase brings the province’s total manufacturing shipments to $987 million dollars. Manufacturing is a vital part of Saskatchewan’s economy that is providing more jobs and opportunities for Saskatchewan people.
DOUBLE DIGIT INCREASE IN NEW VEHICLE SALES
There is more good news about Saskatchewan’s economy - more people are buying new vehicles. According to a new report by Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan had a 17.6 per cent increase in new vehicle sales for April 2008 compared to April 2007. With more new cars on the road, people are showing they have confidence in our economy. This report is a sign that the Saskatchewan economy is continuing its forward momentum. Your Saskatchewan Party government is committed to building on this confidence and bringing more opportunities to Saskatchewan so everyone can share in our growth.
BREAK AND ENTERS DECREASE IN SASKATOON
Justice Minister Don Morgan announced last week a 16 per cent decrease in the number of break and enters in Saskatoon. In the first four months of 2008 there were 534 break and enters in Saskatoon, compared to 640 for the same period last year. This decrease in crime is part of a crime reduction strategy that was developed in partnership with several Saskatoon organizations. Saskatoon’s crime reduction strategy means more home and business owners can feel safe in their community. This strategy is part of your Saskatchewan Party government’s promise to deliver safety and security to the province.
