Legislative Report (19 September 2008)
Saskatchewan's Economy Will Remain Strong
Premier Brad Wall said this week that Saskatchewan’ economy is well-positioned to sustain our historic economic growth and avoid the turmoil in the U.S. and global financial markets. Our strong resource base, population growth and plenty of job opportunities will help keep Saskatchewan a “have” province.
Saskatchewan is leading the nation in several economic indicators and the Conference Board of Canada recently said that Regina and Saskatoon will lead all Canadian cities in economic growth for 2008. Your Saskatchewan Party government will continue to tirelessly promote Saskatchewan, including an address to the 2008 Global Business Forum in Banff, Alberta this week. By actively promoting the opportunities in Saskatchewan to the rest of Canada and the world, our government is working to help maintain our economic strength so that all Saskatchewan families can benefit.
PROMISE MADE, PROMISE KEPT
This week our government announced a formal commitment between the Ministry of Education, the Office of the Treaty Commissioner and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations to implement mandatory Treaty education. With the introduction of two new resources to our Kindergarten to Grade 6 classrooms, schools now have the means to educate students from K to 12 on the Treaties. Educating students about the Treaties that have shaped our province is part of our government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships between First Nations and non-First Nations people throughout Saskatchewan.
GOVERNMENT AND BUSINESS JOIN TOGETHER FOR NATIONAL JOB FAIR
Our government and Saskatchewan employers will be teaming up later this month to make a big impression at the National Job Fair in Toronto. Premier Brad Wall along with Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris and Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart, will be travelling with more than 50 Saskatchewan employers to the National Job Fair in Toronto, Canada’s largest career event. The Saskatchewan Recruitment Zone will be the largest of any province, which is sure to make an impression on the 12,000 job seekers who are expected to attend the event. Your Saskatchewan Party government will also be supporting the recruitment effort with a $400,000 investment in a strategic marketing campaign that aims to attract job seekers to the Saskatchewan Recruitment Zone and SaskJobs.ca. Saskatchewan now has the fastest employment growth rate in the country, with over 15,000 more people working than last year but there are still plenty of great opportunities available with over 9000 jobs posted on SaskJobs.ca.
