Legislative Report, 28 January 2005
We have just finished our sixth annual tour of the constituency (see Constituency Tour 2005) and I want to thank everyone that took the time to come out, have a cup of coffee and bring me up to date on what’s happening in your community. Although I am around the constituency throughout the year, this structured tour is always a highlight.
Many people came to tell us of the celebrations their community is planning for the centennial and I want to thank all who have invited me to take part in their celebrations.
The smoking ban was by far the hottest issue this year. I spoke with many bar and hotel owners, some certainly more supportive of the ban than others but without exception, they are all calling for a level playing field. This is a competitive business and it was made even more difficult by the 60 day grace period and other rules brought in by the government that seem at best, ambiguous.
Healthcare, long waiting lists, agriculture, crop insurance, BSE were all topics of discussion. Some people come with personal issues and some come with ideas for change and want to discuss the possibilities for our province.
This year’s tour covered 15 communities over five days. I am so grateful to the people who come out to take part in this tour as they prepare me as I go into the spring session of the Legislature. You help me represent you.
