Saskatchewan Moving Forward
Now that 2009 is almost over, our thoughts turn to 2010. By all indications, it will be a good year for Saskatchewan. Most financial forecasters are predicting our province will lead the country in economic growth.
The Saskatchewan economy took a serious hit in 2009 because of low potash revenues. Potash sales fell to their lowest point since 1972, but that is only half of the story; the rest of our economy remains strong. For example, this year Saskatchewan had the lowest unemployment rate and the best job creation record in Canada. Saskatoon has the lowest unemployment rate of any Canadian city; Regina is second. Saskatchewan’s population rose by over 16,000 people this year - the fastest rate of growth in over 50 years. Average weekly earnings have never been higher in our province.
Higher weekly earnings and historic income tax cuts our government made mean Saskatchewan people are keeping more of what earn. They also have more money in their pockets due to property tax cuts announced in the spring budget. The provincial debt has been reduced by $2.6 billion, or 40 per cent. We invested $2.3 billion in building and repairing highways, schools, hospitals and other community infrastructure projects. Because of our tax cuts, 80,000 lower-income families no longer have to pay provincial income tax. Benefits for seniors under the Seniors Income Plan have more than doubled.
In the spring, our government will announce a balanced budget. This goal will be achieved by holding the line on spending, deferring some projects that are still in the planning phase and continued growth.
Saskatchewan will continue to move forward.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
