Increased Support for
Saskatchewan Surgical Care Initiative

Our government is continuing to take action to put patients first. This week we announced $40 million in additional funding for the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative. This means….

  1. More than 5,500 additional surgeries performed this year;
  2. More surgeons and anesthesiologists to perform the extra operations;
  3. More nurses in operating rooms; and
  4. A safer patient experience through improved surgical equipment and renovations to operating rooms and recovery ward.

Ultimately, the additional funding is about reducing surgical wait times for patients to less than 12 months by the end of 2012 and to no more than three months by 2014. Wait times have already dropped significantly. Since 2007, the number of patients waiting more than 12 months for surgery has dropped more than 27 per cent - the number of people waiting longer than 18 months is down by more than 50 per cent.
