Legislative Report for September 22, 2005
The people of Indian Head – Milestone are like those throughout the province, who are sick and tired of the cost of living rising while many of them try to live on fixed and minimal incomes. Even if we understand that many costs such as fuel prices are universal, it does not make making ends meet any easier. All of us look to cut costs where we can.
So the news of the common voice of SUMA, SARM, SSBA, PARCS, and the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, asking the provincial government for significant reform to the education portion of property taxes is both good news and way past due.
They have called on the government to increase its share of funding for education to 50% in 2006, 55% in 2007 and 60% by 2008. This tax relief is exactly what we in the Saskatchewan Party have been fighting for. If the Saskatchewan Party had won the last election, the formula for funding education would be very close to 50 / 50 today.
The government has raised enough with their increase in the PST over the last year and a half to way beyond any commitment they already made to tax relief. There is absolutely no reason for the government to be doing well and the people in the province to be struggling.
