Legislative Report

Time To Get Serious About Crime

It’s not Toronto, Montreal or even Vancouver. It’s Saskatoon with the highest crime rate in all of Canada, followed by Regina. Saskatchewan has the dubious distinction of leading the entire nation in overall crime for the eighth straight year.

Under the NDP, Saskatchewan finishes first in many of the crime categories in a recent report from Statistics Canada. According to the report, Saskatchewan has more than 14,000 incidents of crime per 100,000 people. Saskatchewan’s NDP government presides over worst crime rate in Canada – a rate that is TWICE the national average. Saskatchewan is also the murder capital of Canada, with the murder rate at a 30 year high. Regina and Saskatoon are home to the highest break-in rates.

This report demonstrates the NDP government is failing to solve the crime problem that is plaguing Saskatchewan. This is not something to be proud of – it is something that needs to be fixed. The NDP’s failure to address crime continues to put Saskatchewan people at risk.

Another recent Statistics Canada survey shows that the majority of people in Regina and Saskatoon believe that crime levels in their neighbourhood have either stayed the same or increased in the last five years.

Saskatchewan people have a right to feel safe and secure. They should not have to be concerned about their personal safety in their homes or walking on the street.

The time has come to get serious about crime by putting more police officers on the street and dealing with the root causes of crime, including drug addiction.
